India is preparing to establish itself in the field of semiconductor chip production with plans, for the Indian made semiconductor chip set for mass production by 2025 as per Union IT and Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnavs announcement, at the Madhya Pradesh Global Investor Summit 2025. He emphasized the advancements made by India in the semiconductor sector propelled by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
The Indian Semiconductor Mission (ISM) which was initiated in December 2021 with the goal of building a semiconductor industry ecosystem by providing incentives, to manufacturers has garnered attention from both international and local entities, in the technology and electronics sector of India.
In June 2023 Micron made an announcement, about constructing a semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Gujarat that marked a milestone in their endeavors. Subsequently in September 2024 Tata Electronics partnered with Taiwans PSMC to reveal blueprints for Indias semiconductor manufacturing plant which has the capacity to produce 50 000 wafers monthly for sectors, like automotive, computing and wireless communication.
Many known companies, like Larsen & Toubro (L&T) well as the Adani Group, have entered the semiconductor chip manufacturing industry due to its importance both strategically and economically recognized by them.Indias partnership with the United States through the US India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (ICET ) has also promoted progress in fields such, as AI,quantum computing, and semiconductor technologies.
India is poised to make a mark in the semiconductor industry with government support and strategic investments along, with international collaborations to reduce reliance, on imports and enhance technological independence.
