A new milestone in EV charging has been achieved with the help of the latest electric SUV by BYD which can be charged in just five minutes with the company’s powerful new chargers. This innovation has made China the world’s leading country in the EV industry and is currently leading other countries by miles. John Helveston, an engineering management professor at George Washington University, says that when it comes to battery technology, BYD is light years ahead of Tesla. BYD’s chargers work at twice the power of Tesla’s newest superchargers, and can give 249 miles of range in just five minutes. The company intends to deploy 4,000 of these chargers across China to boost the country’s EV charging infrastructure. On the contrary, the adoption of EVs in the US is hampered by the time it takes to charge the cars. Home charging is convenient for daily use but range anxiety and lack of easily accessible fast chargers in urban areas are a problem. Faster charging options such as BYD’s could accelerate the uptake of EVs and myrtle change consumer perception. This is because China has a strong government support and a very fast industrial innovation in the area of EV charging. The U.S. is not set up to easily install high power chargers whereas in China, the state owned power company can do it easily. However, fast charging has its consequences on power grids. It is therefore important to moderate in order to avoid overloading especially during peak hours. If used properly, these high powered chargers could actually benefit the grid by utilizing excess solar energy that is available during the day. The Chinese have emerged as global leaders in the development of electric vehicle charging technology and grid control. With innovation increasing at a rapid rate, the future of electric vehicles is looking brighter.
