Amazon, a significant player in e-commerce, intends to create many rest areas for delivery staff in the upcoming years. These areas will provide air conditioning, drinking water, chairs, and mobile charging stations. The first of these facilities was opened by the business on Friday in Gurugram.

According to Abhinav Singh, vice president of operations at Amazon, the facility would be open to all delivery personnel, not only those employed by the business. This was disclosed to The Indian Express. After providing their information to a security officer manning the site, drivers would be allowed to utilise the rest area for thirty minutes. According to Singh, the Gurugram facility could accommodate up to 15 individuals at a time.

“The goal is to make sure that resting places like this are available before the summer months arrive in all cities with high levels of heat or humidity and where we have a significant presence in terms of a network of points,” Singh stated. When asked how many of these facilities the firm was aiming for, he replied, “We haven’t taken an end target in mind because it will depend on the need that we have.” However, it’s enough to mention that you’ll have several points, beginning with places like Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune.

Amazon is hardly the only corporation focused on freelance employment to establish this kind of rest area. Major food delivery company Zomato also runs a few establishments similar to this throughout the nation. The decision was made in response to accusations levelled against Amazon and other gig economy firms of providing subpar working conditions, particularly for delivery workers who are often employed by these companies on a contract basis with little to no benefits.

When asked why the business opened this kind of facility at this time, Singh responded, “It’s one of those things that just happened now…,” considering that Amazon entered India more than ten years ago. Ideally, all of this could have occurred ten years ago. The summers of today are more brutal than those of three, four, or five years ago. The humidity level is greater.

“Our inquiry showed that on May 16, 2024, at around 16:30, following the completion of the day’s breaks, a building employee led a small group of coworkers and colleagues at the Subject FC (Fulfilment Centre) in a vow. The vow was seen by the staff member as a motivating tool. This was a regrettable, one-off occurrence that obviously violated our workplace policies. In response, Amazon stated.
