India once again proved that it is a nation that is ‘happy with food’- Swiggy food delivery platform revealed in its year-end report 2024, capturing the spirit of the year that ended. Biryani seemed to be consumers’ favourite. In the rolling ninth version of ‘How India Swiggy released by Swiggy recently, it established that 83 million orders were placed this year where, 158 orders per minute or 2 biryanis per second and the popularity did not die for biryanis. It was Biryani’s ninth consecutive year at the top. Dosa was the next competitor, positioned as 23 million orders proving it to be the viewer’s favorite food. As stated earlier, Shillong ordered the most for this dish in 2024. Noodles were and remained the order of the day.
According to the report, one customer in Bengaluru spent Rs 49,900 on pasta in 2024, consuming 30 spaghetti plates, 40 macaroni and cheese dishes, and nearly 55 Alfredo dishes. According to Swiggy’s annual report, dinner was the “ultimate Bahubali” of mealtimes, with 215 million orders in India in 2024—nearly 29% more than lunch orders.
Now, what breakfast order did India place this year? With 8.5 million dosas and 7.8 million idlis ordered in 2024, Swiggy reported that the South Indian favourites were the most popular. In 2024, Bengaluru celebrated its heritage with an astounding 2.5 million masala dosas, while Delhi, Chandigarh, and Kolkata couldn’t live without their traditional crowd-pleasing dishes of chole, kachoris, and aloo parantha, respectively.

The most customers hustle at the night they are; one man from Delhi ordered 250 onion pizzas at a time.
3.6 million customers ordered chocolate lava cakes, making them the most popular dessert option. 2.27 million chocolate truffle cakes were then ordered in 2024. Hyderabad’s favourite dish was shahi tukda, but Ludhiana was a big fan of black forest cake. In Kozhikode and Kochi, the most popular dessert was falooda. During Holi, a user from Lucknow purchased gujiyas for Rs 28,830.
India has demonstrated that food plays a significant role in its festivities by placing an astounding number of orders during festivals and celebrations. Six million orders for biryani were placed during Ramadan, making it the most popular dish in India, along with haleem and phirni. In the meantime, during Ganesh Chaturthi, Mumbaikars ordered 2,26,393 modaks, with one customer placing an order for Rs 12,000 worth of modaks. India also ordered 11.4 million milk cakes for Diwali. It would be impossible to discuss festivals without mentioning cricket. A Bengaluru fan ordered 120 burgers to celebrate India’s victory in the T20 World Cup, while a Chandigarh fan ordered 70.
Orders are coming in from all over the nation. In 2024, Swiggy’s Dineout served 22 million diners and saved a total of Rs 533 crore thanks to an increase in table reservations and deals per hour from 337 to 1,242 over the year. According to the report, cities like Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Lucknow, and Indore trailed behind Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune. Customers saved an average of Rs 708 per order using wallets, up from Rs 672 in 2023. With a total savings of Rs 121 crore, Delhiites saved the most, followed closely by Bengaluru with Rs 101 crore. For the biggest bell yet, a diner in Mumbai paid Rs 3 lakh for a single meal at a restaurant. Delhi was the luckiest city, as one of its users saved Rs 1.22 lakh on a single order at Malamen. With an average transaction of Rs 4284, Kanchipuram topped the charts. Shillong came in second with Rs 3678 and Siliguri with Rs 2747.
Bengaluru had almost 289,000 alcohol transactions, which was significantly more than Delhi’s 96,000. According to Swiggy, its delivery partners travelled 1.96 billion kilometres in 2024, “equivalent to 533 thousand drives from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and still stopping for chai.” Swiggy acknowledged the delivery superheroes, stating that Kaleeswari M from Coimbatore led the female partners with 6,658 orders this year, while Kapil Kumar Pandey from Mumbai delivered 10,703 orders.
