Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) obtained a 30 MW/120 MWh battery energy storage project from NHPC through its BESS Tranche-I tender process. The BESS project was awarded through competitive bidding to serve Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd (KSEB) as its end-user.
The storage facility will be built at the 220 kV substation in Kerala according to TPREL’s announcement. The 30 MW capacity will provide up to four hours of backup, crucial for supporting Kerala’s grid during peak demand and enabling renewable energy integration.
TPREL has achieved its first Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) which extends for 12 years. The project will reach completion within 15 months to establish storage as a fundamental component for round-the-clock renewable power and grid stability.
The project represents NHPC’s initiative to establish 125 MW/500 MWh standalone battery storage facilities in Kerala through Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding with Viability Gap Funding support.
The addition brings TPREL’s renewable energy portfolio to approximately 10.9 GW with operational capacity at 5.6 GW (4.6 GW solar and 1 GW wind) and 5.3 GW under development which demonstrates its position as a leader in India’s clean energy transformation.
