The UK low-carbon project at Tata Steel will start construction in July 2025 with operational start-up planned for 2027. The company announced its transition to electric arc furnace (EAF)-based steelmaking in its FY2024-25 annual report which represents a significant move toward sustainable manufacturing.
Tata Steel CEO & MD T V Narendran together with ED & CFO Koushik Chatterjee confirmed that all necessary planning approvals have been obtained for the $1.5 billion initiative at Port Talbot. The UK Government supports this initiative with £500 million in funding because both parties share a common goal to decrease industrial carbon emissions.
Tata Steel has permanently closed its traditional steelmaking facilities at Port Talbot while delivering UK customer orders through imported substrate materials from India and the Netherlands and other international locations. The strategic change includes IT infrastructure modernization and supply cost optimization and operational expense reduction from £762 million to £540 million.
The UK low-carbon project will use local scrap resources to achieve complete implementation of low-emission EAF technology. The company achieves an essential goal in its decarbonization plan through this development which supports worldwide environmental objectives while strengthening its position in sustainable industrial growth.
