The major technical outage that grounded all Alaska Airlines flights for three hours on Sunday night ended when the airline resumed operations. The Seattle-based airline confirmed that an IT error triggered a system-wide ground stop for both Alaska Airlines and its subsidiary, Horizon Air, beginning at around 8 pm Pacific time. The Federal Aviation Administration also reflected the halt on its website.
The ground stop ended at 11 pm when Alaska Airlines started resuming its flight operations. The airline warned that flight delays would persist because they needed to move aircraft and personnel to restore complete operations. The company announced on social media that it would need additional time to restore its complete operational capabilities.
The airline experienced additional operational difficulties after dealing with a short Seattle flight stoppage in September because of technology problems and the well-known Flight 1282 emergency in January 2024 when a door panel detached during flight.
The airline dedicated itself to both passenger safety and service recovery during the return to normal operations. The airline expressed gratitude to its passengers for their tolerance during the interruption and promised to conduct a complete investigation of the recent system failure.
