On February 28, Americans all across the country stopped spending their money for 24 hours to protest against the economic boycott of DEI policies. The demonstration was called by the grassroots group People’s Union USA and picked up steam on social media, which told consumers to stay away from big businesses and spend their money on food from small businesses and cash only.
The boycott made its appearance in response to the fact that many companies have downgraded their DEI efforts following the policies of Donald Trump and the so-called “department of government efficiency” of Elon Musk (Doge). This has made consumers believe that corporations are cowering to political pressure, and therefore, consumers should also exercise their pressure through their wallets.
People shared their anger at the corporate politics and the reversal of social initiatives. Eric Butcher, an advocate from California, explained that the country needs to act now against the economic policies that affect low-income people. „Those billionaires only understand money, so we have to hit them where it hurts,“ he said.
Lisa Rayner, a small business owner from New Mexico, raised similar issues. „I have always supported economic boycotts and this one is no exception,“ she said. Her mother, 82, also participated in the action, saying that people power can overcome corporate power.
This boycott occurs while other economic actions are taking place as well. The Target boycott by We Are Somebody started on February 1 in response to the company’s DEI reductions, and Black faith leaders have called for a 40-day economic strike beginning on March 5. The Latino Freeze movement has also asked people to stay away from companies that do not address immigrant and minority populations.
It is hoped that these efforts will make corporations think twice before abandoning DEI policies and reconfirm their willingness to promote diversity.
