AppleTV+ has expanded its availability to Android users through the Google Play Store demonstrating a unusual shift by Apple which typically retains its services within the iOS environment. Apple launched this expansion because it needs more subscribers to grow its services revenue which faces strong competition in the market.
The launch happens as Apple TV originals such as Silo gain popularity alongside substantial investments in premium content. Apple spent $20 million per episode for the second season of Severance which launched in January 2024. The move enables AppleTV+ to reach more viewers and grow its subscription base through Android support. Apple depends more and more on its services segment because its hardware sales continue to decline. Apple’s services segment delivered a record $26.3 billion in the first quarter of 2024-25 as its subscriptions iCloud advertising and Apple Care flowed 14% annually. Apple needs this strategy to address its hardware difficulties in China where it faces intense competition. Although Apple’s ecosystem remains largely closed with many features exclusive to iOS devices, Apple has expanded its platform to include Android users. Apple will not abandon its closed platform anytime soon according to analyst predictions. AppleTV+ launched a recent promotion by offering free weekend access across multiple devices to draw new subscribers. AppleTV+ operates in a highly competitive market and remains below Netflix in membership numbers. AppleTV+ stands out through its $9.99 monthly cost in the U.S. yet Netflix offers an ad-supported plan at just $7.99 per month. By expanding to Android systems Apple can improve its market standing within the streaming industry.
