The Singaporean market has chosen BYD as its leading vehicle brand during the first four months of 2025 by surpassing Toyota’s previous market leadership position. The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD achieved 3,002 sales between January and April which resulted in a 20% market share. The market data shows Toyota sold 2,050 cars while Tesla managed to sell 535 units.
The Singapore market has witnessed BYD’s fast growth because the country maintains expensive certificate requirements for car ownership. The 2024 sales data showed Toyota leading with 7,876 units while BYD sold 6,191 vehicles but the market dynamics have changed in 2025. The company achieved this success through its global expansion strategy while Chinese competitors engage in intense price competition. The company plans to distribute half of its total production output across international markets during the next decade.
BYD achieved exponential growth in Singapore after entering the market one year after Tesla in 2022 by doubling its sales to 1,416 units while Tesla’s sales increased by only 7%. The Singaporean market features high car prices because the BYD Atto 3 SUV costs at least S$165,888 while the Toyota Corolla Altis costs around S$170,888.
