Canada will never be part of America, said Mark Carney following a comfortable victory in the race to lead Canada’s ruling Liberal Party, putting him on a pathway to becoming the country’s next prime minister. Carney, a former central banker, will succeed Justin Trudeau who has been in power since 2015. It is during Carney’s leadership that Canada finds itself in the middle of a trade war with the United States which he termed as ‘potentially catastrophic’. Nonetheless, he was confident that Canada has the strength to fight back and said, “We will win”. His strong position against the influence of America shows his determination to defend Canada’s sovereignty and economic independence. Carney stressed that while Canada has no problem with the U.S., it will not accept that the two countries should have the same policy. The new leader faces many challenges, including economic and political ones, such as the conflict with the new U.S. administration, the Canadian dollar’s weakness, and inflation. His experience as Governor of the Bank of Canada and then the Bank of England makes him a safe pair of hands in financial storms, but some have pointed out he has not yet had to prove himself as a political leader. Carney’s victory in the leadership race also marks a change of direction for the Liberal Party, which is expected to adopt a more centrist and economic-oriented policy under his leadership. Nevertheless, his conservative opponents are already getting ready to fight his policies before the next election. In view of the ever rising tensions between Canada and the United States, Carney’s strong stance ensures that Canadians are conscious that their nation will not be bullied by the Americans.
