Google has revealed ‘AI Mode’ within its AI Overviews feature, using the powerful Gemini 2.0 model to solve your toughest problems and questions. This experimental tool, first offered to Google One AI Premium subscribers in the U.S. and currently available only to them, improves search by handling the not-so-simple, the math, the coding, and the multimodal.
With AI Mode, you can continue your inquiry with further questions and follow up questions to delve deeper. Google said the feature doesn’t return generic web pages but instead pulls data directly from the Knowledge Graph, global results, and product databases in real time. It employs a ‘query fan-out’ strategy to conduct parallel searches across different subtopics in order to provide an overall outlook. For instance, if you want to know how a smart ring, smartwatch and tracking mat differ in tracking sleep, Gemini 2.0 operates in a systematic manner; it plans, searches and refinements its output based on the results. You can also follow up with more specific questions like “what happens to your heart rate during deep sleep” to get more specific information. Although it is still under development, Google pointed out that the use of AI Mode may incorporate some unintended biases from source websites on the internet. Nevertheless, the development is still ongoing and more features are being added such as more visual responses that include images and videos, better formatting and easier navigation to useful websites. In a follow up update, Google revealed that teenagers can now use AI Overviews without having to create an account, thus expanding the availability of AI-enabled search improvements. Thus, the Gemini 2.0 is at the heart of the shift to a new model of searching for information and knowledge.
