The Italian government supports the proposed Iveco Group breakup through the sale of its defense unit to Leonardo and its commercial vehicle division to Tata Motors of India. The Italian government under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed support for the deal with conditions that protect employment and intellectual property and national security. The defense unit which holds strategic importance will transfer to Leonardo as the state-controlled defense firm of Italy.
The Italian government continues negotiations while considering using its “golden power” rule to impose deal conditions or block transactions involving vital national assets. The legal instrument known as golden power has previously blocked important foreign acquisitions including UniCredit’s attempt to acquire Banco BPM.
Iveco Group has declared its plan to divide its operations before making official announcements about the upcoming deals. Industry Minister Adolfo Urso stated that technology protection along with job preservation and local production maintenance must be prioritized while Rome supports high-quality foreign investments.
The strategic business transformation will enable Tata Motors to grow its European market presence while Leonardo builds up its defense capabilities. The deal would transform Italy’s industrial sector if it receives approval through golden power conditions.
