Prime Video will introduce restricted advertisements throughout its TV shows and movies starting June 17, 2025 to support its content development strategy. The platform announced to Indian subscribers that their Prime membership fees will stay the same while maintaining lower ad numbers than traditional TV and competing streaming platforms.
Users who want to watch Prime Video without interruptions can select the ad-free version by paying either ₹699 per year or ₹129 per month. The platform introduces a new optional upgrade which represents a fundamental transformation from its previous subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) model like Netflix. Prime Video will adopt a hybrid model that matches JioHotstar by providing users with both ad-supported and ad-free viewing options.
The company stated that MX Player as its ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) platform will not receive an ad-free version under this new policy. The company avoided revealing any details about its planned content investment following the introduction of advertising.
The announcement about Prime Video adding advertising support for content expansion in 2025 came out in October 2024. Prime members will keep their shopping and entertainment benefits intact through their current membership plans.
