Donald Trump extended the deadline for TikTok once more by issuing a new executive order that sets the new deadline at mid-June. The popular social media app faces its second delay regarding forced sale or potential ban because the deal needs additional work to secure all necessary approvals.
ByteDance confirmed that ongoing talks with the US government are taking place but they emphasized multiple unresolved essential matters. The Chinese government has put all deal approvals on hold because Trump introduced extensive trade restrictions which include a 54% tariff on imports from China.
The app received its initial deadline for January 19 but Trump extended it to April 5 when he took office. The new 75-day extension continues to allow potential buyers Oracle, Blackstone, Amazon, Walmart and OnlyFans founder to negotiate purchases of TikTok.
ByteDance opposes any forced divestment through sale because it considers such transactions impractical from commercial and legal and technological standpoints. Trump maintains TikTok will not “go dark” while his administration seeks a genuine deal with China.
The social media platform TikTok stands as a central point in a multifaceted conflict which combines political elements with trade regulations and technological aspects.
