The National Energy System Operator (Neso) warns that the UK’s clean electricity supply expansion rate is insufficient to achieve its legally required 2050 climate targets. The National Energy System Operator (Neso) predicts the UK will produce 274 million tonnes of carbon emissions during the next decade which exceeds the 185–204MtCO2 target for net zero by 30%.
The Committee on Climate Change issued its second official warning about insufficient planning for two-fifths of required emissions cuts after the first warning last month. Neso chief Fintan Slye emphasized that the adoption of clean energy technologies and energy efficiency measures needs immediate acceleration.
The UK will only achieve 148GW of renewable electricity by 2035 which falls below the required 170–190GW to fulfill climate targets. The emissions will persist at current levels because solar, wind and nuclear energy development does not advance quickly enough.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband accused climate policy opponents of betraying future generations as net zero debates continue to intensify. The government asserts it is speeding up progress through new projects and a £40bn private investment drive and home energy improvement initiatives.
The UK needs to take immediate action to achieve its clean energy targets because time is running out according to experts.
