Volkswagen, a company famous for producing automobiles, has surprisingly struck gold with a completely unexpected product: its currywurst. Despite the company’s current financial issues and a decrease in car sales, the German automaker has witnessed a significant rise in the sales of this much-loved item. The Volkswagen currywurst, a meat product made of sliced sausage, tomato sauce, curry powder, and sometimes paprika has become the company’s bestseller. In the year 2024, Volkswagen sold more than 8 million currywurst which is a record sale for the company. This was a 200,000 increase from the previous year, which shows that the demand for the snack is growing and it is served every day to factory workers in VW canteens and local supermarkets near its manufacturing facilities. The automaker is still struggling financially – its net profit dropped by 30.6% and it faced reduced sales in China. Nevertheless, the currywurst has become a bright spot for the company. It also has its problems in the global market and increases in production costs and the threat of US tariffs. The VW currywurst was introduced in 1973 and is made by the company’s own butchers in its service factory and is a special product for the company, with a dedicated parts number: 199 398 500 A. The product’s importance to the company came into the limelight when its discontinuation in 2021 brought backlash from employees and celebrities, including former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. Although Volkswagen operates in a difficult global environment, it can still turn to its traditional currywurst to cheer up consumers and improve sales.
