    Calcutta High Court scraps OBC certificates, Modi criticizes INDI

    The Calcutta High Court declared various classifications as Other Backward Classes(OBC) beneath a 2012 west Bengal Act, pointed at reserving vacancies in state administrations and posts, as illegal. This action was taken since the west Bengal government had issued OBC certificates to muslims without clear legitimization, apparently for the sake of securing muslim votes. Modi criticized this strategy of vote-bank politics and submission, stating that it had exceeded worthy boundaries.

    In a ruling on petitions contesting the Act’s provisions, the court invalidated a few OBC classifications outlined in the west Bengal backward classes (Other than Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) (Reservation of Vacancies in Services and Posts) Act, 2012. The judgement specified that people from the annulled classifications, who are already utilized or have benefited from reservation, or have succeeded in any state choice prepare, will not be impacted.

    As per the most recent ruling, OBC certificates issued by the state government are no longer valid for work or other benefits. Commenting on the Calcutta high court’s choice to nullify all OBC certified issued in west Bengal after 2010, chairman of the NCBC commission, Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, expressed that amid their audit in 2023, they found that 65 muslim castes and 6 hindu castes had been included to the OBC list after 2010. Ahir said that in spite of asking a report from the state government on this matter, they did not get any reaction. He communicated bolster for the calcutta high court’s decision, expressing that it is appropriate.
