Indian Oil achieved a historic milestone by finishing the largest green hydrogen project in India at its Haryana-based Panipat refinery. The 10,000 tonnes per annum plant will begin operations by December 2027 as part of Indian Oil’s sustainability and decarbonization initiatives.
The project establishes Indian Oil as a green hydrogen operator while supporting the National Green Hydrogen Mission of the government. The refinery operations will use hydrogen produced from this project to replace fossil-based hydrogen which will reduce carbon emissions while creating a cleaner industrial process.
The company has established the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCoH) for the project without revealing any cost information. The production of green hydrogen through water electrolysis with renewable energy sources results in water as the only emission when burned thus making it an effective tool for greenhouse gas reduction.
Indian Oil’s sustainable energy leadership becomes solidified through this initiative which demonstrates India’s developing energy infrastructure. The project represents a significant advancement for India’s hydrogen economy while driving the country toward its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
