The Indian Railways plans to construct 100 MEMUs and 50 Namo Bharat trains to improve short-distance travel across the country. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made this major announcement to demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving passenger travel. The new MEMU trains will feature 16 and 20 coaches which represent a major improvement from the current 8 or 12-coach models. The new manufacturing facility at Kazipet in Telangana will produce modern trains while increasing production capacity and operational efficiency.
The construction of 50 air-conditioned Namo Bharat trains will serve intercity routes. The first Namo Bharat train operated in Gujarat during the previous year as the company introduced faster rail services with improved comfort. The Railways introduced two major developments which include the launch of India’s largest automobile loading terminal at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant in Haryana. The Railways’ GatiShakti Cargo Terminal will operate eco-friendly logistics while processing more than 4.5 lakh cars each year.
The minister demonstrated reforms through the Bikaner division’s 24-hour final passenger chart release system which enhances planning and minimizes travel stress. The Railways aims to promote environmentally friendly transportation through its goal of moving more than 1 million cars by rail during FY25. The initiative demonstrates India’s developing rail network and its increasing logistics capabilities.
