The Tesla India showroom began operations today at Maker Maxity Mall located in Bandra Kurla Complex of Mumbai to introduce electric cars to the Indian market. The electric vehicle manufacturer launched its Model Y electric car with prices starting at ₹60.1 lakh for the rear-wheel-drive model and ₹67.8 lakh for the long-range variant. The prices in India exceed those in the US, China and Germany because of the country’s high import taxes.
The black Tesla logo on a white background at the sleek showroom drew many people who wanted to see the partially covered Model Y display. During the showroom inauguration ceremony Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis urged Tesla to establish research facilities and manufacturing plants in the state.
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis described Mumbai as India’s innovation center while praising Tesla for its sustainable design and global innovative approach. The high price point of Tesla vehicles will target wealthy Indian urban consumers who will face competition from premium brands including BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
The Indian government targets 30% electric vehicle adoption by 2030 while Tesla’s market entry strengthens the expanding EV segment that currently leads with Tata Motors and Mahindra in the mass market.
