Bhutan enters a Memorandum of Understanding with Adani Group to establish 5,000 megawatts of hydropower facilities which represents a significant advancement for the kingdom’s renewable energy targets. Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) and Adani Green Hydro Ltd finalized their agreement in Thimphu while Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay attended the ceremony.
The agreement builds upon the Wangchhu Hydropower Project which currently operates at 570/900 MW capacity while DGPC maintains ownership of 51% of the project. The new MoU requires both parties to locate new hydropower and pumped storage sites and create Detailed Project Reports before executing projects through phased development. The agreement represents a strategic achievement for Indian-Bhutanese energy cooperation.
Naresh Telgu of Adani Green Hydro described the partnership as an “effective demonstration of international cooperation between borders” while praising Bhutan for its ability to supply dependable green energy to India. The partnership between DGPC and India strengthens Bhutan’s energy relations with India while advancing regional energy security according to Dasho Chhewang Rinzin.
The agreement supports Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Roadmap which aims to establish 20,000 MW capacity by 2040. The partnership receives full support from both governments of Bhutan and India which will transform South Asian clean energy integration.
